Vibrant, historic, modern - this is the Trois-Rivières greeting visitors today. Founded in 1634 as the second permanent settlement in New France, Trois-Rivières is Canada’s oldest industrial city.

For a forty year period in the early 1900s, Trois-Rivières was known as the pulp and paper industry capital of the world with five mills in operation. Today only two mills are operating and a visit to Borealis History Centre will allow you to feel the heat, smell, humidity and noise of the paper industry of the 20th century and see how paper was made.

To discover the historic downtown core, take a walking tour along the Heritage Trail or enjoy a relaxing stroll in the gardens of Our Lady of the Cape Shrine. Get a different perspective of the city from the St Lawrence River on a 90 minute boat cruise or get a sense of what life was like behind bars on a visit to the Old Prison.

A City of Trifluvians

Small islands at the conflluence of the Saint-Maurice and St Lawrence Rivers divide the river into three mouths, giving Trois-Rivières its name.  The city's inhabitants are known as "Trifluvians".

The museum of papermaking (Borealis) was very informative. I took a self-guided tour with a headset - it was worth the modest admission fee.
