Northern Surcharge, US Travel & Prohibited Travel Routes

YesUnless U.S. travel has been included in your reservation at no cost, there is a  fixed charge for travelling into the United States.   See our Pricing page for this charge. Please note that U.S. Agriculture may not allow fresh meat, fruits and vegetables across the border.  If you are planning on crossing into the USA we suggest you shop for your groceries once you are in the United States.  If you decide after you pick up your RV that you wish to travel into the United States, you can call us on our toll-free number and we will add this to your booking.  We will process the fee on your credit card. Please be aware, there is no coverage should you travel in the U.S. without prior authorization.

TRAVEL ON THE BELOW LISTED ROADS IN THE FOLLOWING STATES/PROVINCES IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN AT ALL TIMES:

Mexico – travel to Mexico is prohibited at any time.

St Pierre & Miquelon (off the coast of Newfoundland) – prohibited at any time.

Alaska
Denali Highway (Highway 8 from Paxson to Cantwell),
Dalton Highway (north of Livingood)
Eagle, Alaska (Hwy 5 north) from the junction of Hwy 9 (Top of the World Highway) and Hightway 5 west
McCarthy Road between Chitina and McCarthy
Northway Road (off AK-2) to Northway
Nabesna Road (off AK-1) to Nabesna

Mainland USA
Manhattan Island – RVs are prohibited at any time
Burning Man Festival, Black Rock Desert, Nevada

British Columbia
North Shore Road east of Kissinger Lake Campground (on Vancouver Island)
Head Bay Road (Highway 28) from Gold River to Tahsis (on Vancouver Island)

Yukon
North Canol Highway

Newfoundland & Labrador
Trans Labrador Highway (Highway 500) from Goose Bay to Labrador City
Highway 389 from Labrador to Baie Comeau

Some roads in the United States and Canada have seasonal restrictions on them. This means that Guests can travel these roads only at specific times of the year.  Currently these travel restricted areas are:
  • Travel to Death Valley is limited to the low season (1 October through 30 April ) due to extremely high temperatures which can cause system failures.
  • Travel on the Dempster Highway in the Yukon is not permitted between 15 September and 15 May due to road conditions. We are happy for our Guests to travel on this road between 16 May and 14 September. Guests must have completed all travel on the Dempster Highway by 14 September.
Guests assume all responsibility for any expense or loss of time while travelling in restricted areas.
Parking of your vehicle is prohibited in the greater metropolitan areas of Montreal and Ottawa. This includes all pay parking lots, hotel parking lots, side streets, malls, etc. To travel into these areas, park your vehicle at a campsite and use public transportation, taxi, etc.

Travel in an RV is prohibited on Manhattan Island in New York.  Please leave your RV at your campsite and travel to Manhattan Island by public transport.
The Northern Surcharge is a fee that is added to all rentals picking up from Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal & Halifax that travel to the northerly parts of Canada.
